1Ls: In case you missed our email listing the upcoming deadlines for diversity scholarships & fellowships, the list is included below. If you’re planning to apply for any of these opportunities, make sure to meet with your counselor to review your cover letter & resume. You can make an appointment by emailing law-career@luc.edu.
The Vedder Price Diversity Scholarship (Deadline: December 31, 2012)
Eligible candidates are first-year law students enrolled at and attending one of the following Illinois law schools: the John Marshall Law School, Chicago-Kent College of Law, DePaul University, Loyola University Chicago, Northwestern University, University of Chicago and University of Illinois. This scholarship includes a $5,000 monetary award for law school-related expenses for each year in which the recipient remains in good academic standing and attends an Illinois law school, as well as a guaranteed summer associate position in our Summer Associate Program after the scholarship recipient’s first year of law school.

Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (Deadline: January 4, 2013)
The mission of the Judicial Intern Opportunity Program is to provide opportunities to students who are members of racial and ethnic groups that are traditionally under-represented in the profession. The program also provides opportunities to students with disabilities, students who are economically disadvantaged and students who identify themselves as LGBT.

Perkins Coie 1L Diversity Fellowship (Deadline: January 14 or 22, 2013 depending on location)
Since 1991, Perkins Coie has offered student fellowships to first year law students from a diversity of backgrounds. The fellowships provide students a $7,500 academic scholarship and a paid summer associate position immediately following the completion of their first year.

McAndrews, Held & Malloy (Deadline: January 15, 2013)
Each year, McAndrews offers a $5,000 fellowship and a paid summer clerkship to a qualified first-year law student at an ABA-accredited law school who has a diverse background, possesses a degree in science or engineering, and is committed to pursuing a career in patent law in Chicago.

Twin Cities Diversity in Practice 1L Summer Rotation Clerkship (Deadline: January 15, 2013)
First-year law students now have a unique summer clerkship opportunity that combines a traditional law firm clerkship with experience working in an in-house corporate law department. Twin Cities Diversity in Practice is a collaboration of law firms and corporate law departments seeking to enhance the diversity of the legal profession. Our mission is to attract, recruit, advance and retain attorneys of color in the Minneapolis and St. Paul community.

Stoel Rives 1L Diversity Fellowship (Deadline: January 16, 2013)
Stoel Rives offers First-Year Law Student Diversity Fellowships in their Portland and Seattle offices. Recipients will each be awarded a salaried summer associate position after their first year of law school and a $7,500 tuition scholarship for the following academic year.

Harter, Secrest & Emery Diversity Scholarship (Deadline: January 18, 2013)
The Harter Secrest & Emery LLP Diversity Scholarship was established in 2005. The rm awards one 1L law student with (1) a $7500 scholarship to be applied to the student’s second year tuition and (2) a paid 10-week summer associate position between the student’s first and second year of law school. To be eligible for the Diversity Scholarship, the applicant must be a full-time currently enrolled 1L law student who is in good standing at an accredited law school. First year students who are members of populations historically under-represented in the legal profession are encouraged to apply.

Reed Smith 1L LCLD Summer Associate (Deadline: January 31, 2013)
As a member of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity, Reed Smith is offering a 1L Summer Associate position in their Chicago and Pittsburgh offices, which will provide a first-year law student with the opportunity to join their 2013 Summer Associate Program.

Association of Corporate Counsel 2013 Diversity Summer Internship Program (Deadline: February 1, 2013)
The Diversity Summer Internship Program places top law students with diverse backgrounds from select Illinois law schools in internships in Chicagoland corporate legal departments. The internships expose the students to in-house practices and career possibilities in corporate legal departments. This program is vastly different from any other program available to Chicagoland law students. Most corporate legal departments do not have a summer internship program for law students. The program provides law students who have completed their first year of law school with a unique opportunity to get an inside look at the life of an in-house attorney.

Finnegan Diversity Scholarship (Deadline: February 6, 2013)
Each recipient of the Finnegan Diversity Scholarship is given $15,000 per year for tuition and other law school fees.

BP Summer Legal Internship Program (Deadline: February 8, 2013)
BP Legal is proud to renew its Summer Internship Program for 2013. First-year interns will work on a variety of challenging and interesting legal matters. During the summer, interns work closely with BP attorneys and paralegals obtaining practical experience in an international corporate legal department.

Bricker & Eckler Charles H. Walker Minority Scholarship (Deadline: February 15, 2013)
Minority students in their first year of legal studies currently enrolled in an ABA-approved law school are eligible to apply for the scholarship. One scholarship in the form of a $10,000 cash award (less any applicable taxes and withholdings) towards law school tuition and other law school related expenses will be awarded. In addition, the scholarship recipient will receive a paid summer associate position for the summer of 2013. All minority 1L law students currently enrolled in an ABA-approved law school are eligible to apply.
